Tuesday June 5

A moth in the bathroom last night showed the limitations of photography as a means of identification.

Marbled Minor agg
After looking at photographs I made a very tentative identification of it as a Tawny Marbled Minor. However, the moth books urged caution and basically said that the Minor group; Marbled Minor/Rufous  Marbled Minor/Tawny Marbled Minor can only be safely identified through genitalia examination.

I emailed the photo to JS who advised me that all the moths of this group caught should be recorded as Marbled Minor agg.

There are several other groups of species that this applies to, and so they too will be treated that way.
